DEER EDITOR: FEARLESS – Great First Week

So the DEER EDITOR: FEARLESS Kickstarter from Sami Kivelä and myself has been up 6 days and it’s been one hell of a week – [LINK]

DE 2_cover

We reached our fully funded goal in 13 hours, and gave a roundhouse hoof to the first stretch goal in under 24 hours.

From there, we’ve hit the next stretch goal, and tonight we clocked 200 backers, and we look set to eclipse the completed funding from the first campaign sometime this week, I’d wager.

It’s a 3 week campaign, so this middle week is the dead zone, which we wanted to compress, but I’m hoping we rock strong and hit $3000 – that’s my true pie in the sky total. We cleared ~$2300 first time, so going up to $3k would be ace, plus at that level we unlock the ability for all backers at $3 and up to write a ‘6 word antler noir’ story to be included in the Broadsheet PDF and I think that would be grand.

But for now, projections aside, I want to look over the past week and say thank you to everyone who has backed, or send out a signal boost, or just not actively petitioned against us.

This comic means a lot to me, because I love the main character, because I love experimenting with tablet view comics and how that affects storytelling, and because I love working with Sami, and because this crazy crowd funding malarkey makes it feel like we can all make comics, right?

For now, thank you for believing in antler noir comics and we hope the next fortnight keeps going as strong as we have so far.

DEER EDITOR: FEARLESS Kickstarter is live

Don’t you just love seeing a Kickstarter get fully funded in 24 hours?

DE2_Media2_bThe campaign for DEER EDITOR #1 was fully funded in about 25 hours. I wanted to be sneaky – I doubt anyone ever actually ‘checks’ these things – and say it happened in 24, say I only needed one single day unit to crush my goal of success, but I couldn’t do it. I had to be honest. Plus, it’s given me a bar to beat this time. I want to wrap in 23 hours. Or less.

So, while we’re on the topic, the DEER EDITOR: FEARLESS Kickstarter is LIVE [LINK]

Hit us for just $1 and you can have the full story – all 48 tablet pages – in a pdf, or you can get other things for a variety of dollar values. Original art from Sami Kivelä, a pdf full of scripts by me, original art from me, an audio commentary, a limited edition printed script with liner notes from me [already sold out]. All fun, all priced low, and all just for you.

Hit the campaign, choose your pledge, and then go and tell your friends.

As we hit success ranges, all backers will get thank you downloads, and once we hit the goal, all backers will get a download, and then in the stretch goals the idea is that all backers get a variety of other new exciting downloads.

If we hit goal, all backers get an extra 2 page short story, an 8 page short story, and an ebook. If we hit all stretch goals, people could get their hands on another ebook, a successful pitch document, the opportunity to be published in the comic, some prose words from me, and a digital magazine download, and maybe even a pdf of an upcoming gig that’s yet to formally be announced/launched.

So there’s value to be had for just a buck. Or more.

Let’s make the next 21 days count because we believe in #antlernoir

DEER EDITOR: FEARLESS Kickstarter Launch Imminent

DE2_Media2_b

Sami Kivelä and I are about to wade into the murky waters of Kickstarter once more for our latest DEER EDITOR comic, FEARLESS.

DE 2_coverTomorrow, our campaign launches and we’ll be hitting the pavement to rally up $1,250 worth of pledges to get Sami paid, as well as fill all our other collective coffers because Sami, Nic J Shaw, Dan Hill, and myself stepped up and made the comic first in the hopes it was ace enough to def get funded.

So, you can drop $1 for the basic story pdf, or you can buy some OG Kivelä art for $90, and plenty in between, and we hope you’ll tell your friends. If things get hectic, we’ve got some ace stretch goals lined up.

DEER EDITOR: FEARLESS Kickstarter starts tomorrow, because we believe in antler noir.

DEER EDITOR: FEARLESS Upsize Pledges

DE 2_coverDEER EDITOR: FEARLESS is coming to Kickstarter next week to continue the tale of Bucky: editor, deer, man last seen shot in the chest.

Sami Kivelä and I are bringing the heat to this new issue that looks at obsession, vampires, and antlers. It’s 48 tablet pages of beautiful insanity and we can’t wait to launch the campaign. This week we already told you about the book [LINK] and the basic story pledge levels [LINK] so here we wanted to upsell you on the good stuff and also SHOW YOU SOME GORGEOUS PIN UPS! Here we go.

$10 – TALKING PIN UPS

Select one of the pin ups by our amazing guest artists and I’ll write a word balloon/thought bubble/caption and I’ll dirty letter it myself and JPEG it to your inbox. Comes with the BROADSHEET PDF for #2 + RKL SCRIPT #2 PDF, as well as the Tabloid PDF for #1.

You can choose from those available [which I’ll send to you in a detailed list at the end of the campaign but you can see some listed below]. I will then write something ghastly and superfantastic to be lettered onto the pin up and we’ll send this one of a kind digital keepsake straight to you.

$15 – PAGE 3 PIN UPS – limited to 5

Select 1 of 5 ink sketches of Dan the Subeditor by Ryan K Lindsay. Comes with the BROADSHEET PDF for #2 + RKL SCRIPT #2 PDF, as well as the Tabloid PDF for #1.

I’m no illustrator but I promise to really put my all into these inked sketches on A4 paper. Plus, y’know, due to the scarcity of me ever trying to draw something, these artifacts are sure to be worth millions on the wild west of the bitcoin market. Check out an example of the goods at the bottom of the page.

You can choose from sketches of Dan: standing, looking, thinking, zoning out, and agonising, and I’ll send it to you in the mail.

$20 – AUDIO COMMENTARY

Ryan will record an audio commentary of the issue that you can listen to as you read the book in realtime. The audio files will be sent to you. Comes with the BROADSHEET PDF for #2 + RKL SCRIPT #2 PDF, as well as the Tabloid PDF for #1.

I love audio commentaries on DVDs, and I love reading people’s annotations, so this is sure to be good, right? I don’t know why but I’m crazy excited to do this one. Hugely.

So those are some upsize pledges, now let’s roll out these pin ups – enough of the words already!

DEER EDITOR: FEARLESS Digital Pledges

The Kickstarter for DEER EDITOR: FEARLESS, the second issue in our antler noir tale, launches Tuesday March 1st [next week]. We are aiming to raise $1250, and a lot of that will come from digital options from our campaign.

DE 2_cover

Here are your options for the:

NEWSPAPER SUBSCRIPTION LEVELS

$1 – TABLOID PDF

The story in a DRM-free PDF. Nothing extra, no distractions, just the whole story at an entry level price ready to read on your tablets.

~48 pages, + credits and chapter pages

This level might be my death because if everyone only chooses here I’ll need 1250 backers to make my goal. But I’m a firm digital reader who loves the $1 price point. So, here we are.

$2 – TABLOID PDFs

The DRM-free PDFs of DEER EDITOR #2 and #1. Nothing extra, no distractions, just both stories at an entry level price ready to read on your tablets, so those who missed out the first time round aren’t left in the dark.

~96 pages, + credits and chapter pages

$3 – BROADSHEET PDF

The #2 story, with back matter, sketches, pin ups, and script, in a DRM-free PDF, as well as the Tabloid PDF for #1.

~110 pages, + other extras as we unearth them :]

This is the deluxe package, this is the sort of PDF I’d lose my mind for. Process junkies, those wanting a peek behind the curtain, this is your place to be. I also think this price is fair but a gamble to get us across the line.

Inside you will find the entire story, plus some back matter written by me, then some sketches and thumbnails by Sami, as well as some pin ups of Bucky (by Vic Malhotra, Alfie Gallagher, Eric Zawadzki, Boy Akkerman, Matt Lesniewski, Marc Noble, and maybe others), some designed prints by me, at least one ink sketch by me, as well as the full script of this issue.

$7 – WEEKEND PDFs

Okay now, this is THREE! PDFs. You get the BROADSHEET PDF for #2, and also the RKL SCRIPT #2 PDF, feat. scripts of MANY of my other projects, as well as the Tabloid PDF for #1.

The extra PDF will contain scripts to:

NEGATIVE SPACE #1 – my book at Dark Horse with Gieni  – DOWN – my short with Gieni in SHUTTER – THE SECRET HISTORY OF PAUL KEATING AND HIS MOLE MEN – a short story of Australian political debauchery –SKYDANCER – a short that’s my version of a Bond villain’s origin story – HIGH FLYERS, LOW LIVES – a short story about crime and remote control planes – and HEADSPACE #4-6 – the meat in the middle of my book with Monkeybrain/IDW.

I love reading comic scripts, they certainly help hone my own writing, so I hope some process junkies out there really dig on this beast of a package.

So those are your digital options so far. Last campaign, 247 different people locked in at one of these levels. Tomorrow, I’ll discuss why you might want to pledge a little bit more for some other things we’re offering. For now, get excited, we officially launch in less than a week!

DEER EDITOR #2 Kickstarter is Coming!

On March 1st, a Kickstarter for more antler noir begins when we launch the DEER EDITOR #2 campaign to raise $1250 over 21 days.

DE 2_cover

After the Kickstarter for DEER EDITOR #1 ended on 230% funded [LINK], Sami Kivelä and I always knew we’d be back. It’s taken 18 months, and in that time we’ve completed CHUM, a 3 issue mini at ComixTribe launching April 27, and Sami’s done a few other things as well, but now we are back.

The issue is all done [except for letters] and to get the PDF of the story it will cost you $1 [and that’s an Aussie dollar, so US peeps will feel the discount on that one].

We’re also gonna make the PDF to issue #1 available for a buck, also, so the main event in a stripped back fashion is as cheap as we could reasonably make it. Beyond that, like the first campaign, there’s gonna be some value add pledge tiers. Wait’ll you see the pin ups and who did them!

So set your clock for Tuesday the 1st of March at 7pm Aussie EST because Bucky is back, and we all hope you’ll join us for the fun and the fangs [yes, fangs, you’ve been warned]. More information will roll out throughout the week, pin ups, bigger PDFs, original art, and a very special audio deal.

A Few Review Links

I love reviews. Good, bad, helpful, snarky, whatever. A review gives me something to work with, and that something is external feedback, an extra set of eyes. A review is always fascinating to me.

And, yes, I do read the reviews. I want people to read my work, it’ll do me well to know if I’m serving them well in my role.

So I have some reviews to link to below, and one of them I didn’t see for weeks. You’d be surprised how much I do not google myself. As such, if you review my work, drop me a tweet @ for it, or something. I wanna know your thoughts, and am happy to share them.

Without further ado – the links.

DEER EDITOR #1 gets a glowing review from Zander Riggs over at Destroy the Cyborg

He says, “But this is the kind of story I wait for.  This is the kind of story that I search desperately through the release lists for. This is the type of comic I wish would get more attention. This is Deer Editor.

Consider me stoked.

HEADSPACE #5 gets a 9/10 review from Ed Garrett over at TMStash

He says, “Issue #5 takes the story into territory that is both heartbreaking and horrifying.

Yup.

To say I’m flattered by great reviews undersells it. I’m flattered when someone remembers my name. I’m floored when someone digs my stuff.

So, these have both found their way to me in 2015 and made me happy and excited for make more comics. Which I’ll go do now.

DEER EDITOR – 100% Funded – Onto Stretch Goals

Screenshot 2014-08-13 06.40.21

Aw, yeah, we got there. And in 24 hours, to boot.

And we are still going. Cannot thank you enough for the RTs and water cooler chatter and your hard earned money slapped down for a product we believe in.

Now, what next? Well, no reason to close up shop and go sip mint juleps in the shade just yet. Let’s roll out some rad STRETCH GOALS!

For those uncertain, a stretch goal is something I promise to do or give if we hit further funding goals. The idea being, we’ll all be keen to see these things happen so we’ll lay out crab pots and snare more backers for the campaign. Right, now that we’re on the same page, here are the Deer Editor 2014–

STRETCH GOALS

ALS thumbnail by sPae

$1250 – PITCH PROCESS – get a free download of a pitch I did for A LOVE SUPREME, a book about a Doctor Strange type hero who is defeated in battle but uses the power of love to save her consciousness and insert it into the mind of her boyfriend with him. Then, four months later, they break up, and she’s still stuck in there.

This download is aimed at those process junkie types who wonder how to assemble and structure a pitch. Which can be hard when you can’t find many to look at, so here will be the whole thing.

$1500 – COMIXTRIBE SAMPLERS – I wrote short stories for the OXYMORON and SCAMthology shorts at ComixTribe and you can get handy DRM-free PDF downloads of both stories, one with Daniel J Logan art, the other with Adam Masterman art.

$2000 – GET LOVESICK – a while back I got to place a 5 page comic short into the back of an Image comic. The short was LOVESICK – with Daniel J Logan art, Jordie Bellaire colours, and Ed Brisson letters – and it ran in the back of GRIM LEAPER #2 by Aluisio Santos and Kurtis J Wiebe. It’s a nasty short many wouldn’t have seen before, so I’m dropping it here as a bobbing lure of a DRM-free PDF download.

$2500 – ANTLER PROSE – if we hit this goal, I’ll add a short prose story to the BROADSHEET PDF (yes, I wrote prose, too, I’ve even been published by Crime Factory). I’ll be sure to make the short nasty twisted fun.

$3000 – CURRICULUM #1 – I’ve been busy squirrelling away at a new property called CURRICULUM, along with my writer’s room of Dan Hill, Ben Rosenthal, Grant McLaughlin, and Danny Djeljosevic the Destroyer, and artists like Sami Kivela, Daniel J Logan, Elsa Charretier, Bryan Coyle, and more. It’s a tablet page sci fi periodical about an intergalactic class that ends up lost on the other side of the universe and must find their way back. The first issue is written by me, illustrated by Sami Kivela, coloured by Marissa Louise, and lettered by Nic J. Shaw. If we hit $2.5k I’ll give it out as a DRM-free PDF download – which means you’ll get the first issue well before the title actually launches.

Yep, that’ll get us started. Help us out, spread the word, and let’s see what magic we can weave.

DEER EDITOR KS – RADIO DRAMA

DEER EDITOR – a tablet crime comic about the editor of the crime beat who’s also a deer by Sami Kivela, Nic J Shaw, Dan Hill, Christopher Kosek, and myself – launches on Kickstarter in under a week.

I dropped the main beats on that earlier this week – click through for the downlow, the basic book pledges, and a preview of some pages.

Today, we talk about the pledge that is my favourite, the pledge I’ve never seen offered before, and the pledge that could get us across the line if people want some good times, are willing to take a gamble, and have a heart. I give you:

$20 – RADIO DRAMA

Ryan will record the entire issue as a ‘radio drama,’ with audio files sent to you. Comes with BROADSHEET PDF + RKL SCRIPT PDF.

Dear lord, I’ve been wanting to do this for years. Now, take into account, this won’t be some slick production, but man alive is it going to be fun to do. I just hope I have the voice to carry such an activity. The SFX from my mouth might seem suspect at first but I’m certain they’ll win you over. For me, this is the heart of this campaign. If you’re looking to really support with your money and get something rad in return, here it is. Enjoy.

To listen to a sample of what the radio drama will be like, check this video here.

I am crazy excited to do this. It could end up terrible, who knows, but man alive it’s going to be fun. I really hope people dig down on this one hard.

UNDER ONE WEEK.

You’ve got yourself under one week to get excited, tell your friends, ask me questions if you want, and generally bring the ruckus. We launch next week, on Monday/Tuesday (depending on your relationship to the international date line), and will run for a month. All updates will run here, some updates will run at the DE HQ, deereditor.tumblr.com

Keep up with the story, don’t get gored.

DEER EDITOR KS COMING SOON – RKL SCRIPT PDF

DEER EDITOR – a tablet crime comic about the editor of the crime beat who’s also a deer by Sami Kivela, Nic J Shaw, Dan Hill, Christopher Kosek, and myself – launches on Kickstarter in under a week.

I dropped the main beats on that yesterday – click through for the downlow, the basic book pledges, and a preview of some pages.

Today, we talk about one of my favourite pledges from the upcoming campaign:

$7 – WEEKEND PDFs

That’s right, TWO PDFs. One is the BROADSHEET PDF, and the other is the RKL SCRIPT PDF, feat. scripts of MANY of my other projects.

The extra PDF will contain scripts to:

HEADSPACE #1-3 — THE MANY HAROLD HOLTS OF SPACE AND TIME — LOVESICK — SURVIVOR — My shorts for the OXYMORON +SCAMthology books from ComixTribe — JONBOT V MARTHA – the guest one-shot strip I wrote for the SICBA award winning Colin Bell and Neil Slorance’s webcomic — LITTLE MAN IN THE BIG HOUSE #1 – a short story about a prison for supervillains that is in the works — YELLOW – a short story I have coming soon — CAPTAIN HUMAN THE ROBOT, both the All Ages Edit and the After Hours edit — CURRICULUM #1 – a forthcoming sci fi tablet periodical — and a few other projects, as well as whatever else I can find floating about that isn’t terribly embarrassing. It’ll be worth easily over 200 pages.

I love reading comic scripts, they certainly help hone my own writing, so I hope some process junkies out there really dig on this beast of a package. I know I have pretty much every script available to download online so I’m always keen to see new stuff pop up, I hope you are, too. And it’s been fun to read through these old time capsules of my talent (imagined, and nascent, and never quite real, ha). This PDF is going to be monstrous, and if you like it, you’ll love it. You also get a peek at things coming down the pike, so that’s exciting.

UNDER ONE WEEK.

You’ve got yourself under one week to get excited, tell your friends, ask me questions if you want, and generally bring the ruckus. We launch next week, on Monday/Tuesday (depending on your relationship to the international date line), and will run for a month. All updates will run here, some updates will run at the DE HQ, deereditor.tumblr.com. Tomorrow I’ll run details of a high end pledge level, one of a kind, some original art.

Keep up with the story, don’t get gored.
